The tenth planet has a moon! It's also being orbited by a suspicious set of quotes "" throughout most of the articles about it so far...

It's really swell that the government got the people involved this time. I felt that we were more excited about it than most Chinese citizens during the last go-around.

Yeah, it's funny how our own government space program has gotten so pathetic that we're routing for the Chinese just to hopefully wake them up with some competition. How NASA's managed to fall to number three with the head start they had and the resources behind it boggles the mind.

Eh? I'd hardly say we're at number 3. This is their second manned launch, on the shuttles alone we've launched 114 missions for a total of 2.8 flight years. We've been to the moon over 6 times and have sent numerous probes to explore the planets. We have private interests wealthy enough to build space vehicles and have untold numbers of artificial satellites. Sure we're done and out at the moment, but don't take the recent failures to in any way imply that we are not the numero uno space power on this planet. The ESA, Russians, and China are in no way prepared to compete on an equal level.

Re: Today in the Galaxy... | ||

I wish I felt that way, but the fact is, we don't have a rocket we feel safe enough to launch humans in. We can't get to the Space Station without the Russians, and for all the big talk about back to the moon and onto Mars, nobody has agreed in Congress to pay for it. While these "lesser" space powers have captured the imagination of the world, our own citizens largely don't support our program. I'm all for private industry getting up there and passing up all the government programs, but that still has a way to go.
Meanwhile, much furhter out in the galaxy, it's discovered that black holes can create and nurture stars! |

The somewhat dreary state of Wisconsin is talking about opening up a spaceport geared towards private launches. An interesting enterprise, and a bit safer from hurricanes than current launch sites.
