Damn. That didn't take long. It could take decades before they see anything resembling real stability in Afghanistan. My concern is that it is necessary for them to rush the establishment of a security organization. This could lead to infiltration by former Taliban or tribal faction members, causing more instability. This seems almost impossible to avoid.

From what I've read, the man was little more than a thug, installed because he was a powerful warlord with lots of followers. He, like many in the so-called "Northern Alliance" had direct ties to the opium poppy (i.e. heroin) trade, and welcomed Bin Laden when he first came to the country. So some lesser thugs offed him, that's how it often goes in gangsta-land.

He was part of the Northern Alliance? I thought he was an ethnic Pashtun?
But you're probably right about the thug part. Most of them are - that culture of post-Soviet warlordism will be so very hard to break. Either that, or they're American ex-pats who are looking for new adventures in nation-building. |

He was both, the Northern Alliance had quite a few different ethnicities represented.

Mm, yeah, you're definitely right. I was just under some weird perception that the Northern Alliance was entirely Tajik or something. Not that I know what I'm talking about.
You know, all this warlordism has a lot of parallels to the current issues involved in a Palestinian administration. I find it difficult to imagine the creation a relatively incorruptible government from scratch without full-scale revolution (to dispense of the "old guard"), and that is never as likely as it is needed. |

I don't know how reliable this is -- it's been circulating via e-mail -- but I've heard similar stories from sources like GNN. And it's by Robert Fisk, a reputed int'l journalist.

Assuming we had a vested interest in rebuilding Afghanistan to begin with, a year and a half after the bombs first fell, we have yet to succeed as nation-builders.

The Pentagon can't seem to find any blind, crippled, puppies to beat this Spring, so what the Hell, they're planning a new offensive in Afganistan!
