Ahh, there are few things in this world like an enthusiastic soldier.
Even if it seems certain that you will lose, retaliate. Neither wisdom nor technique has a place in this. A real man does not think of victory or defeat. He plunges recklessly towards an irrational death. By doing this, you will awaken from your dreams. - Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai, Yamamoto Tsunetomo |

Given the huge mess in Iraq, the smaller one in Afghanistan is mostly staying under the radar in the news, but word that an American security contractor (read: mercenary) killed his Afghan interpreter is not exactly winning over hearts and minds to democracy. Also, the latest American soldier killed brings the total since the invasion up to 198.

President Karzai sacks dozens of senior police chiefs for their inability to contain the anti-U.S. riots, while military forces in the south repulse recent Taliban advances.

The U.S. military recently declined the option of killing 100 Taliban insurgents because they were attending a funeral at the time of their gathering.

Huh, just read the above. Odd, because that never stopped them in Iraq, where uninvolved weddings have been a popular target.

Bush's new pick for Defense Secretary is being portrayed as more moderate, and who's to say that isn't possible, however, there's no denying he can create a powerful, stubborn fighting force. Why look what he created for Afghanistan when he was working for the Reagan administration in the CIA!
