U.S. signals that it may bypass the U.N. security council and form a coalition of the willing to deal with Iran.

Yikes, another "coalition of the willing to send 5 to 10 guys from our Eastern European country in exchange for a sweet arms deal and a Starbucks in our capitol", I'm sure!

Sweet! I've always wanted to see Tehran!

Yeah, I know the majority of Americans are probably stupid and all, but they do seem to be running out of people actually dumb enough to volunteer for this stuff any more...

The war planning for Iran is apparently quite advanced. See y'all in Tehran!

Which is why this media blitz has me apprehensive. I was going to say worried, but I'm not sure where I stand on hitting Iran. It really depends on whether it means we'll have another country to occupy or not. It does have echoes of the last days of Vietnam though, doesn't it? What with Cambodia being semi-analogous to Iran.

I see the analogue, but rice ain't oil. Hitting Iran would have devastating repercussions for all of the world, though the oil companies of course would rake in huge profits like they always do when they make the supply scarce and uncertain. Thankfully we don't have any oilmen in charge of making such decisions...

Re: War with Iran? | ||

The real question is whether or not it's the right thing to do. Does it create a more stable Iraq? Does it curtail their influence in the region? Does it end their nuclear ambitions? Of course there's the other side: Does it make everyone hate us? Does it inspire more terrorism? Does it strengthen Iran's resolve to screw with us? I don't know. It depends. There's certainly a lot of potential to screw up there. But we do need to cut them off short and soon.

It isn't necessarily about "right and wrong" morally in this case, at least not in those simplistic of terms. Throw in some other questions such as: does it destabilize global economies to the point that people all over the West can't afford to drive to work or buy food good shipped to stores by trucks? does it drive Russia and China to feel a desperate need to stop the U.S. as Putin has just begun to vocalize? (that wouldn't even have to be militarily given the huge trade deficit that the U.S. has with China; keep in mind that these countries get considerably more oil from Iran than the U.S. does.)
"Right thing to do" arguments make for effective sound bites, and Bush has been the king of these of course, but don't encompass the way the world actually works. Mind that doesn't matter to the power brokers when millions of Americans are singing along to country singers who say they "can't tell you the difference between Iraq and Iran." However, the wool does seem to be getting pulled pretty thin these days. |

Re: War with Iran? | ||

I'm not talking morally. I'm talking fully self-interest here. A lot of what you're saying seems predicated on oil going sky high. It likely won't. Oil will peak, people will make profits, and a year or so later it will fall again. Putin is making noise because Russia is in bed with Iran on several different levels. Ultimately it's just noise, however.

I honestly wish I had your optimism that starting a full scale multi-national war in the Middle East wouldn't devastate the global economy and/or start World War III.
