I suppose my thoughts on this are going to be rather predictable. I think Dolly Parton said it best, "I'm for Gay marriage, why shouldn't they suffer like the rest of us?"
Conservatives like to go on about how promiscuous homosexuals are, but when they want to establish a life long monogamous relationship we need to ammend the Constitution to prevent that. To me this is a no brainer. I've had a lot of gay friends including gay roommates in my life, and the idea that they should accept that they are second class citizens sickens me. Obviously their relationships have never threatened my ability to function in mine, and I find it patently absurd that somehow heterosexual families are supposed to have trouble functioning because gay people want to have the same rights under the law. Conservatives also like to go on about how gay people want "special rights." What is ironic, is when you deny them equal rights you create that category. I work for the State of Washington where health and retirement benefits are offered to same sex domestic partners as if they were spouses. Why? Because they can't marry legally. So domestic partners of differing sexes end up losing out. It's just so stupid. Then there's the argument that children need a mother and a father. Ideally perhaps, though I think two loving parents will always be preferably to less than that. I don't think there will be a Constitutional ammendment to make divorce illegal (though don't think that there aren't those on the far Right who'd like that too!) I just wish people could let other people make their own choices that do them no harm, and stop trying to legislate everyone else's lifestyle. |

I wholeheartedly agree.
I don't understand how the "sanctity of marriage" is threatened by homosexual marriage. I am angered by how many conservatives often say that the government should stay out people's business and are generally for states' rights except for when their own religion is involved (however indirectly). If G. W. Bush gets that amendment defining marriage as abetween a man and a woman, then let's get even more into people's private lives. Let's have every marriage involve a sex anatomy check, y'know just to enforce the law. I think most heterosexual couples would be disgusted by being asked to drop their pants before being married and then the idea would become clearer to some people that the government doesn't belong in people's private business like that. hear hear! I agree wholeheartedly... you both said it best. I think they're a bunch of homophobes who feel heterosexual marriage is somehow "threatened" by gay marriage. they personally feel threatened by homosexuality.

I thought for a while about what to add, since you've all already put it so persuasively. I guess all I'm for is consistency -- if this government is about equal rights for everyone, that should reasonably extend to everyone, no matter what develops in the social fabric.
I'm tellin' ya, the thing that's always troubled me about conservatives (besides the fact that I happen to disagree with them on practically any issue I can think of) is how they seem to operate at least 20 years behind the times. But maybe that's a general misperception on my part, living in New York and all. Even if it seems certain that you will lose, retaliate. Neither wisdom nor technique has a place in this. For those who would take the Bible literally and change the Constitution to match, here are some other important Biblical Marriage Laws to add to the Bill of Rights.
