Re: Sleep: A Long Lost Skill | ||

I've been wondering a lot about death and sleep and how they may relate. I think a lot of it started when I had to put my cat to sleep. I began to wonder if that was an accurate way of putting things. When he went out in my lap he did seem very relieved and at rest. His body grew warmer, rather than colder as energy escaped. I'm not sure what goes on when I sleep. I often don't remember my dreams (SL on the other hand remembers plenty and dreams all night long.) To me, sleep is not unlike death, though it is fullfilling in a restful way, which death is often not seen as. Who knows?

It's very interesting that you bring this up, because for some Native American tribes, their word for sleep translates loosely into "little death."

You know, ever since my midterms and projects ended about two weeks ago, it's like my body just gave up on me. I went from averaging 2 hours (a day for an entire month) to sleeping "like mad" lately, getting maybe 6, 7 hours a night for the past week (which is easily the new sustained record for me), and I also find myself napping in my classes almost all the time.
My problem now is that I can't figure out how to stop. In the room the women come and go

That's great you're finally getting some rest. I'd say it's the approach of winter and the cold weather makes us all want to just lie in our cozy beds another five minutes... but it seems this has never happened to you before.
I've started falling asleep in my classes too. It's bad... especially when your in a small room watching a presentation and [boom!] the back of your head hits the wall. And people turn and it's so very not... good. But at least you're awake now. |

I hate waking up after a long night of sleeping on a piece of embroidery or something, and having a design indented on to your face.

It was about 1:30 in the morning a few days ago and I was taking awhile to fall asleep. Suddenly, I thought to myself, that weird being sucked down into something/falling feeling would happen, and it did. I seem to be getting better at shaking myself out of it. Though it's still pretty disturbing...
And there's an update on my current mental state. |

Alia, try moving just your pinky finger. I find that concentrated effort takes me out of those weird sleeping states.

Have any of you ever tried sleeping pills? I wouldn't recommend it -- I see how they can easily become addictive.
Last night, I resolved to sleep early because I had to get up at 7 to go to work; I was determined to come in on time for once. So, I took a sleeping pill, first time in years or something like that. I don't remember falling asleep, but I remember waking up, better than I felt in years. Scary stuff. Once you're hooked on that crap, well, if you thought your insomnia was bad before ... Haha, I was awake around that time too. Went to bed at 5:30 -- it's what happens when someone who can't sleep hosts someone who doesn't want to sleep.

It feels good to be tired again. Over break I got sick of not being able to fall asleep because I wasn't really doing crap. But now, with all the pointless work, I can rest easily.
And I like telling people I wake up at 5:30 for class. If I didn't have anything to do though, I probably couldn't wake myself up before 9. I'm aiming for that time tomorrow... what about everyone else? Someone... anyone... sigh. |

I've abused my brain (chemically) too much to sleep well anymore. I woke up at 6;30, for no good reason.... I woke up at 5;30 too, but went back to sleep then

NY Times magazine has a great cover story on all kinds of strange sleep disorders. Check it out when you get a chance. People are weird.

Haha!
I just read it this morning on my train ride into Manhattan (after I had already painfully overslept by a good 4 hours). Fascinating read. ![]() The cover image was unusually freaky The article's on parasomnias for anyone who's interesting.
