Three Things You Will Hear That Make Listening Essential: 1) "Talking Clock" by Frank Lambert, a recording from a wax cylinder dating back to 1878 (!) If you thought "noise music" was something that the kids invented after they got bored with punk rock, you really need to listen to this track from two centuries back. 2) "Stairway to Gilligan's Island" by Little Roger & the Goosebumps, from a single that came out exactly 100 years after the recording listed above in 1978 and was promptly sued out of existence by Atlantic Records lawyers on the behest of a seriously miffed Jimmy Page. They didn't just demand that all sales stop, they wanted all copies destroyed, which made it into the mother of all collectibles for many years. I heard this hillarious ancestor of all "mash-ups" played from a brave dj's extremely rare personal copy on KCMU in Seattle back in 1985 and have been longing to hear it again ever since, and now through the wonders of the internet I've heard it, and so will you. Apparently it was finally reissued around 2001 on a compilation of tracks by the original producer, so it's attained semi-legal status, but it's still amazing to hear the verses about the tiny ship being tossed and the Minnow being lost to the rocking guitar cheese towards the end of "STH". In the words of a wise man, "Doesn't anybody remember laughter?" 3 - "Natural gas is hemispheric. I like to call it hemispheric in nature because it is a product that we can find in our neighborhoods." by Noggin from Hajex from the Light recorded at Pacific College of Art in Portland, OR the day after my birthday on January 13, 2001 by none other than Aerick Mackintosh, proving that the legend that he is cursed and cannot enter Portland is patently false, or at least was back then. Noggin put the music in "noise music" with beautiful chunks of bent guitar and violin strings wrapped around the inside of your cerebellum - thus the name of this NW favorite I suppose. There will also be other music during the brief single hour of the program, rest assured. And none of it will be fu[king "Silver Bells".

I remember way back when I was doing a radio show in Bellingham, WA in the '80s from the 100 Watt F.M. station KUGS and one night got a call from Vancouver B.C. I was so excited to have a listener in another country. By today's standards, that's just laughable. Here are the confirmed locations from which the current version of What's This Called?: Villach, Austria London, England Madrid, Spain Bangalore, India Winnipeg, Canada Olympia and Seattle in Washington Pennsylvania and of course Portland, OR Again, those are the confirmed locations, there have likely been listeners elsewhere that I don't know about!

In previous years, when I used to do What's This Called? at KAOS in Olympia, I would actually succumb somewhat to the whole Christmas bullsh!t thing and do something with my radio show right before the dreaded day that had thematic considerations. One year I took all of the Christmas records, cds, and tapes I could play at once and created a hellish cacophony of overloaded seasonal cheer for four hours straight. Often I would simply play punk, post-rock, and noisy songs that had something to do with the season, with the most important song always being "X-mas Rap" by the Treacherous Three. Thing is, I tended to ignore KAOS's "indecency/obscenity policy" and anyway, I was on late at night, so I could play that wonderful song that sums up the holiday so well. Now, I'm on at noon, at a station that leases it's AM signal from the Portland School District, and my good friend the Program Director listens every damn week. So no Treacherous Three, as I am NOT going to bleep that song. So I'm not going to play anything that has the slightest connection to the birth of Christ or fat bearded men who want you to sit on their lap. Nada. What's This Called? will be an oasis where you can escape all the "Silver Bells", Mannheim Steamrollers, and Kenny G versions of "Silent Night", and in fact not even be reminded of such hellish piety. Instead I promise to play music that will wash the head clean of such thoughts and sounds: Merzbow, Muslim Gauze, Sepultura, Black Dice, Frozen Rabbit, Green Milk from the Planet Orange, Einsturzende Neubauten, Aphex Twin... Nothing even pop music enough to remind you of Christmas Carols. And on 12/24, Christmas Eve proper, I'll be doing a full re-broadcast of A:Frequency live at KPSU from 11/19/2005.

I have very little to offer in the way of biographical material about Delphine Dora as there's not much to be found, and what little there is happens to be in French. I get the feeling she somewhat enjoys the mystique. She resides somewhere in Belgium and counts among her influences (or so I gather from her Flickr profile) Tim Buckley, Lee Hazelwood, Nico, Will Oldham, Hood, Shirley Collins, Six Organs of Admittance,and Cat Power. I'll be playing a couple of her most recent songs which she released on her website at Christmas, and which are of a particularly experimental bent with vocals that remind me a bit of Meredith Monk. I'm very pleased to bring you the circuit bent electronics of Portland's own David Chandler AKA Mr. Pharmacist. www.audiodregs.com/thumb/...ndler.html I first became aware of Mr. Pharmacist a decade ago back in 1996 when he played the 2nd Annual Olympia Experimental Music Festival. In those days, I tended to book anyone who said they were interested in playing the festival just based on the idea that if they wanted to play they were probably worth having. Since he was named after a Fall song, this seemed even more likely. So when David showed up with nothing but a small backpack of equipment, I knew not what to expect, which was as it should be. With just the rewired toy keyboards in that backpack he proceded to put on what would for me be one of the most memorable sets in the entire 11 years of Oly Exp Music Fests I've witnessed! In addition to the, usually, noisier stuff he does as Mr. Pharmacist, he also performs as Solenoid doing, usually, more ambient electronics, and as DJ Brokenwindow doing wacky dj sets. He's also one half of Office Products, along with guitar virtuoso Doug Theriault.
